The airliner said on Tuesday that beginning on July 2014, almost 80% of its weekly flights to Venezuela will be chopped because the Venezuelan government has not let it repatriate a due amount of USD 750 million under a stiff exchange control.

American Airlines will keep only 10 out of 48 weekly flights between the United States and Venezuela. It will keep it flight schedule to Miami. However, the routes to New York, Texas and San Juan de Puerto Rico will be canceled, Reuters cited.

“Whereas a substantial amount (USD 750 million through March 2014) is owed to us and because we have failed to find a solution in this regard, we will significantly reduce our flights to the country after July 1,” the airliner stated in a press release.

The airliner claimed to have operated in Venezuela for more than 25 years and that this country was its first destination in South America.

Earlier, on Tuesday, sources disclosed that the airline would go from 38 to 10 flights a week. The news was confirmed by the vice-president of the Venezuelan Association of Travels and Tourism Agencies (Avavit), Sandra González.

González said that the decision will further hit the revenues of travel agencies which rely 80% on sale of air tickets.
